Hair Transplants
Getting a hair transplant in Porto is now possible with the Faithful Hair Clinic. Androgenetic alopecia, one of the most common types of alopecia (baldness), affects 50% of men and 30% of women. Its cause is linked to genetic factors associated with testosterone levels in the bloodstream. In irreversible situations, where the hair does not respond to treatments based on topical and oral medication, a Hair Transplant is the most suitable solution.
Endocrine diseases, genetic predisposition, psychological changes, and dietary habits are some of the most common causes that can trigger hair loss

WHAT IS A HAIR TRANSPLANT?
Having a hair transplant in Porto, at Faithful, means undergoing a minimally invasive surgery that allows the transplantation of follicles (hair) from an area without a genetic predisposition to baldness (the back and sides of the head) to an affected region (hairline, top, and crown of the head).

WHO PERFORMS THE TRANSPLANT?
A hair transplant is a safe procedure, and at Faithful Hair Clinic in Porto, the surgery is performed by Medical Doctors assisted by Nursing staff. At Faithful Hair Clinic Porto, we have healthcare professionals with over 15 years of experience in Hair Transplantation, offering detailed follow-up care for all patients over a period of 18 months.
WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?
The entire surgery is performed under local anesthesia, making it a painless technique. The patient remains awake throughout the entire procedure.

WHAT TECHNIQUE IS USED FOR FOLLICLE EXTRACTION?
With the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique, follicles are removed from the scalp one by one using a micro-punch, eliminating the need for visible incisions in the donor areas. All extracted follicles are examined under an optical microscope and selected based on their hair density before being implanted into the recipient zones.
"Hair Transplantation is the only treatment capable of restoring hair to areas where hair no longer grows."
WHAT IS THE IMPLANTATION METHOD?
For implantation, we use CHOI pens (the most advanced hair instrument), which implant the follicle directly into the scalp without requiring prior incisions. This reduces the risk of damaging the follicle and minimizes the number of openings in the recipient area (DHI Technique).
Through this technique, the surgeon can control the depth, angle, and direction of the follicle to achieve more natural-looking results.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
Redness or flushing in the days following the surgery. Temporary numbness in the donor and recipient areas, which reverses after a few days. Edema (swelling) due to the anesthesia, which may or may not appear depending on the patient's posture after surgery (rare). Infection (rare).

The Science of Extraction: The Engineering Behind Follicular Preservation in Hair Transplantation
The Science of Extraction: The Engineering Behind Follicular Preservation in Hair Transplantation
Today, hair transplantation has evolved from a simple "hair movement" procedure into a high-precision microsurgery intervention. At Faithful Hair Clinic, under the leadership of Dr. Cristina Sá and the permanent supervision of nurse Daniela Machado—who brings over 17 years of experience in hair surgery—we view extraction not as a mechanical step, but as the most critical phase for the long-term success of both the donor area and the final aesthetic result. The secret to a transplant that goes unnoticed lies not just where the hair is placed, but primarily in how it is removed. Because of this, we manage the donor zone with extreme care to ensure an almost imperceptible result, protecting the area and keeping it "fertile" in case a future extraction is ever required. At Faithful Hair Clinic, the hair transplant is entirely painless both during and after the procedure, causes no swelling, and allows a nearly immediate return to normal life (read our article on when you can return to work after a hair transplant).
The Anatomy of the Follicular Unit and the Concept of a Living Organ
It is fundamental for the patient to understand that we do not extract individual "strands of hair." What we transplant are Follicular Units (FUs)—complex biological structures containing sebaceous glands, nerves, a small arrector pili muscle, and, most importantly, the stem cells within the follicular bulge.
Technically, every single extraction is the transplant of a micro-organ. If the surgical instrument strikes the bulb or fragments the structure during harvesting (a process known as transection), that follicle will struggle to survive. Therefore, our approach focuses on the absolute minimization of tissue trauma.
Extraction Technology: The Balance Between Punch and Pressure
Many clinics opt for high-speed automated systems to accelerate the process. In our practice, we prioritize manual and/or low-rotation motorized FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) techniques, tailoring the punch diameter to the unique scalp characteristics of each patient.
-
Diameter Precision: We typically use instruments with tips between 0.7mm and 0.9mm. A punch that is too wide leaves visible scarring (a "white dot" appearance), while one that is too narrow increases the risk of cutting the follicle from the inside.
-
Depth Control: The incision depth is adjusted millimeter by millimeter. We need to release the dermal attachments without touching the base of the root, where the hair’s vitality resides.
Managing the Donor Area: A Finite Raw Material
One of the most common mistakes in the industry is over-harvesting. A patient’s donor area is a limited resource—a "savings account" that cannot be replenished. If we extract too many units from a single zone, the scalp will take on a thinned-out appearance, compromising the possibility of future interventions should baldness continue to progress.
At Faithful Hair Clinic, we follow a homogenous and diffuse extraction pattern. We calculate the follicular density per square centimeter and ensure that the spacing between extractions allows for nearly invisible healing. This rigorous approach ensures that, after recovery, the patient can wear their hair short with almost no visible sign that they underwent surgery.
The Role of Hydration and Ex Vivo Preservation
The time a follicle spends outside the body is its period of greatest vulnerability. As soon as it is extracted, each unit is immediately placed into a hypothermic preservation solution enriched with nutrients that mimic the human physiological environment. This care prevents oxidative stress and guarantees that, at the moment of implantation, the cells are ready to resume their growth cycle immediately.
FUE vs. DHI: When Extraction Dictates Implantation
While extraction forms the foundation, the placement method defines the finish. Here at the clinic, the transition from extraction to implantation can be performed via DHI (Direct Hair Implantation). In this method, we utilize Implanteners—high-precision tools that allow us to control the angle, direction, and depth of each strand without the need to create prior incisions (channel opening).
This technique is particularly advantageous for patients looking to increase density in specific areas without shaving their existing hair, allowing for a seamless integration with natural strands. Additionally, the implantation process becomes faster for the patient, and the healing period is accelerated since the follicular unit is inserted into the implantation zone in a single movement.
Why Faithful Hair Clinic’s "Boutique" Approach?
We differentiate ourselves through time and dedication. While an industrial transplant model focuses on the quantity of follicles processed per hour, our science focuses on the survival rate. There is no benefit to extracting 4,000 units if only 2,000 survive due to rushed handling.
Every surgery at Faithful Hair Clinic is a crafted, bespoke process validated by strict medical protocols, following the most advanced guidelines from the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) World Congresses. The goal is that when you look in the mirror 12 to 18 months from now (see our article on the different stages of a hair transplant), you won't see a "transplant," but rather your own hair, growing with the density and angle that nature originally designed.
